XAT 2027: Exam Date, Registration, Pattern & Cutoffs

Status right now: XAT 2027 will be conducted on 3 January 2027 in a single shift. XLRI Jamshedpur is expected to announce the complete schedule and release the application form in the second week of July 2026 — that is, any day now. We will update this page the day the form goes live on xatonline.in.

What is XAT?

The Xavier Aptitude Test (XAT), conducted by XLRI Jamshedpur, is the second-most prestigious MBA entrance exam in India after CAT. It is mandatory for XLRI's flagship Business Management and Human Resource Management programmes and is accepted by 150+ participating institutes — including XIM Bhubaneswar, IMT Ghaziabad, TAPMI, GIM Goa and FORE — plus several hundred more B-schools that use the score.

What makes XAT distinctive is its Decision Making section: business-situation caselets with no equivalent in CAT, NMAT or CMAT. Candidates who prepare only for CAT and walk into XAT cold routinely underperform here — it rewards dedicated practice with past XAT papers.

Eligibility

  • A bachelor's degree of at least three years' duration in any discipline from a recognised university. No minimum percentage is prescribed for taking XAT itself.
  • Final-year students are eligible.
  • No age limit and no restriction on attempts.
  • NRI and foreign candidates can apply through GMAT scores for most XLRI programmes.

Exam pattern

Structure of recent XAT cycles; XAT 2027's exact question counts will be confirmed in the official bulletin.

Part 1Verbal Ability & Logical ReasoningCounted in percentile

Quantitative Ability & Data InterpretationCounted in percentile
Part 2General Knowledge (+ essay in recent cycles)Not used for percentile; used by XLRI at interview stage
  • Marking: +1 per correct answer, −0.25 per wrong answer, and a small penalty for leaving too many consecutive questions unattempted (a XAT peculiarity — check the bulletin for the current rule).
  • Single shift, computer-based, pan-India.

Cutoffs: what a good score looks like

For XLRI's Business Management programme, overall cutoffs have recently sat in the 92–96 percentile band for male engineers (lower for other profiles), with sectional cutoffs applying too. The HRM programme cuts off slightly lower. Institutes like XIMB, IMT and TAPMI typically shortlist in the 80–92 percentile band. Treat these as directional — each institute publishes its own criteria after results.

How to prepare for Decision Making

  1. Solve every Decision Making section from the last 8–10 official XAT papers — the question style is remarkably consistent.
  2. Learn the scoring logic: answers that balance ethics with stakeholder interest score; extreme or single-stakeholder answers usually don't.
  3. In the last month, do timed sectional tests — DM is as much about not over-thinking as about judgement.

XAT 2027 FAQs

Is the XAT 2027 application form out?
Not as of 2 July 2026. XLRI Jamshedpur is expected to announce the complete schedule and open the form in the second week of July 2026 on xatonline.in.
Does XAT have negative marking?
Yes — −0.25 per wrong answer in the counted sections, plus a small penalty for too many consecutive unattempted questions. The GK section carries no negative marking and doesn't count toward the percentile.
Is XAT harder than CAT?
Sections overlap heavily, but XAT's Verbal is generally considered tougher and Decision Making is unfamiliar territory for CAT-only preppers. Quant difficulty is comparable. With 3–4 weeks of XAT-specific practice after CAT, most candidates convert well.
Can I get into XLRI with GMAT instead of XAT?
Indian residents must take XAT for XLRI's flagship programmes; GMAT is accepted only for NRI/foreign applicants and for certain executive programmes.
