JEE Main: 2026 Counselling Underway & the Road to JEE Main 2027

Status right now: Both JEE Main 2026 sessions are complete. JoSAA 2026 counselling is underway — Round 1 seat allotment is out, and allotted candidates must complete online reporting, document upload and seat-acceptance fee payment within each round's deadline. For 2027 aspirants, Session 1 registration is expected around Oct–Nov 2026.

What is JEE Main?

JEE Main, conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA), is India's largest engineering entrance exam and the gateway to NITs, IIITs and GFTIs through JoSAA counselling. It is also the qualifying exam for JEE Advanced — the route to the IITs. It runs in two sessions (January and April); your better NTA score counts.

Scale, for context: about 15.4 lakh candidates appeared across JEE Main 2026, with roughly 10.3 lakh in Session 2 alone. Twenty-six candidates scored a perfect 100 percentile.

JoSAA counselling: what to do right now

The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) runs unified counselling for IITs, NITs, IIITs and GFTIs. If you hold a valid 2026 rank:

  1. Check your Round 1 allotment on josaa.nic.in with your application number.
  2. If allotted, choose Freeze (accept and exit), Float (accept but stay eligible for upgrades), or Slide (accept but stay eligible for a better branch in the same institute).
  3. Pay the seat acceptance fee and upload documents within the round's deadline — missing it cancels your seat.
  4. If you didn't get a seat, stay registered; vacancies open in later rounds, and CSAB special rounds follow JoSAA for NIT+ system seats.
Common mistake to avoid: "Freeze" ends your upgrade chances permanently. If your allotted branch isn't your true first choice, prefer Float/Slide — you keep the seat either way.

If you're in Class 12 now, the syllabus is the NTA-notified Class 11+12 PCM syllabus. Build on NCERT, add a standard problem book per subject, and start full-length mocks by October — the exam rewards time management as much as concepts.

JEE Main FAQs

Do both sessions count?
You can take one or both; your better NTA percentile is used for ranking. Taking both is free insurance against a bad day — but there's a separate fee per session.
How many attempts do I get?
You can attempt JEE Main in the year of your Class 12 exam and the two following years — so up to three consecutive years (two sessions each).
Is 75% in boards mandatory?
For admission to NITs, IIITs, GFTIs (and IITs), you need 75% aggregate in Class 12 (65% for SC/ST) or a top-20 percentile position in your board. It is not required merely to appear in JEE Main.
What is CSAB?
The Central Seat Allocation Board runs special rounds after JoSAA closes, filling vacant NIT+ system seats. If you miss out in JoSAA rounds, register for CSAB special rounds.
